The Art Gallery of NSW

The Art Gallery of NSW is the state's leading art museum and one of Australia's foremost cultural institutions. It holds important collections of Asian, Western and Australian art (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art) and presents some 40 exhibitions annually, including Artexpress and Operation art.

The Art Gallery of NSW provides an exclusive tailor-made workshop for the Academy’s students in the technical uses of sculpture, mixed media, and print-making. This engaging and informative training is delivered by one of the Gallery’s specially trained artist educators. The workshop takes place at the Gallery’s venue located in the Sydney Domain. Students learn about the art mediums in one of Sydney’s finest buildings, enjoying sweeping views of Sydney Harbour and the Grand Court.


Dr Risë Van Fleet

Risë is the Founder and President of the Family Enhancement & Play Therapy Center, Inc. in Boiling Springs, USA. The organsiation specialises in the training and supervision of child, family, and play therapy professionals as well as the provision of mental health services for children and families. Risë has over 35 years of clinical, supervisory, and leadership experience in community mental health, health care, education, and independent practice settings. Risë has trained and supervised thousands of clinicians internationally. Her materials have been used by professionals and families in over 40 countries, and her writings have been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Romanian, and Spanish.

Risë delivers some of the Academy’s child-centred and filial play therapy training via distance education.  Her child-centred play therapy model is the model adopted by the Academy when using traditional non-directive play therapy approaches. Risë's child-centred play therapy model is a great adjunct to the Academy's child-centred art therapy model and attachment play therapy framework.


Dr Anthony Hynes

Anthony has worked for over 30 years as a General Practitioner (GP) in Sydney’s Fairfield area and is a Senior member of the Australian Medical Association and Fairfield Division of Medicine.  Anthony currently works as a Corporate Medical Advisor for a number of companies across Australia including  IGA, Metcash, Paynter Dixon Distributions, Schenker Stinnes Transport Australia, Esselte Australia, Beaver Sales, QBE, NRMA, ALLIANZ and CGU.

Anthony provides the Academy’s students with consultation regarding working effectively with GPs and other medical practitioners, particularly in the Medicare context. Anthony provides invaluable information regarding the history and present context of medicare in Australia and the implications for mental health clinicians working under this system.


Mal Heap

Mal has been a professional puppeteer for over 25 years, 15 of which has been in television and films. Mal as performed in stage productions in 11 countries and performed over 4000 times to audiences ranging from 10 people to over 75,000 people.  Mal is best known for his characters Waffle (Oasis), Modigliana the Cat (Creature Features ABC TV) and Ollie (Open Seasame on Nick Jr.).  Mal has also puppeteered on other TV shows such as Bananas in Pajamas, Mixy and Bambaloo.

Mal presents the Academy’s students with a charming workshop on puppets. The hands-on introductory workshop includes puppet making, bringing puppets to life, presenting a puppet story, developing a puppet personality and refining puppet performance.


Dr Michelle Shete

Michelle is a creative writer, poet and songwriter, and also has a special interest in teaching meditation to children. She is an elected member of the Australasian Performing Rights Association as a songwriter as well as being a member of the NSW Writers’ Centre.
Michelle is the creator and producer of a short DVD meditation program for children called Quiet Time. She has been involved in community theatre productions in association with Cauldron Arts and has produced a number of community music concerts as fund raising events. In addition to her involvement in various creative projects, Michelle also works privately in Strathfield as a tutor for primary, high school and university students.

Michelle delivers insightful creative writing and meditation workshops to the Academy' s Graduate Diploma students. Michelle's writing and meditation expertise provides valuable guidance for students wishing to use writing and mediation activities with clients, as well as those wishing to further develop their narrative writing pieces for publication.


Kelly Surtees

Kelly is a professional astrologer and writer based in Toronto, Canada. Kelly teaches Astrology through the Canadian Association for Astrological Education as well as the Awareness Institute in Sydney, Australia. Kelly's numerous columns and feature articles on astrology, health and wellness have appeared around the globe in publications such as WellBeing Magazine, Marie Claire, New Woman and The Sun Herald. Kelly is both editor of and a contributor to the annual WellBeing Astrology Guide (Australia).

Kelly delivers a tailor-made introductory seminar series in astrological archetypes and cycles to the Academy's Graduate Diploma students. Kelly’s astrological archetype work complements the Academy’s Jungian archetype framework and also provides students with a fresh perspective on Greek and Roman mythology.
